Bosnia and Herzegovina has a complex and fascinating history that spans over a millennium. From medieval Bosnian kingdoms to Ottoman rule, Austro-Hungarian period, and modern independence, the country has been shaped by diverse cultural influences.
The medieval Bosnian state reached its peak in the 14th century under King Tvrtko I. The Ottoman period (15th–19th centuries) brought Islamic culture and architecture, while Austro-Hungarian rule (1878–1918) introduced Western European influences.
After World War II, Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of Yugoslavia. Following a declaration of independence in the 1990s, the country gained independence and has since focused on rebuilding, reconciliation, and European integration.
